Biodiversity COP17: Gathering in Armenia to accelerate action to protect life on Earth
17 October 2026 · International environmental news
From 19 to 30 October 2026, Yerevan, Armenia, will host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 18 October.
Why does this conference matter?
COP17 will conduct the first global review of collective progress towards implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in 2022. Its goals include protecting and conserving at least 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030, alongside restoring degraded ecosystems.
Three key issues to follow
• Turning international commitments into concrete action.
• Mobilising the funding needed to protect biodiversity.
• Strengthening the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
ASSEDEV’s perspective
Protecting life on Earth also starts in our communities. Preventing pollution, preserving natural habitats and encouraging citizen participation all contribute to this shared ambition.
